The aim is to get an equestrian look and what you can do is get the trousers and a suitable shirt and for one thing, high boots may not be necessary. You are aiming to be inspired by the equestrian look and a suitable bodice and trousers/pants may be sufficient as well as the boots. The fabric/design of the bodice is important. What is meant by shaped relates to the way jodhpurs are structured with proper fabric and shape. Here the equestrian inspired look is only being influenced by the shape of the jodhpurs/breeches and one doesn’t have to have jodhpurs. 

In describing an equestrian look, it is worthwhile to look at coats/jackets to create the look, and remember the pea jacket, the navy jacket look too, as well as the actual riding coat look with a conservative lapel and collar going to hip length. In being inspired by the equestrian look, the black riding jacket can perhaps go to waist length but if one has chosen to wear a skirt/long skirt and one wants to get the equestrian look, then a jacket like the established hip-length riding coat is welcome. 

In some way, to create the equestrian look, one can focus on that hip-length riding coat, or a coat that is styled like the riding coat as well as tight shaped pants. The fabric is important for the pants/trousers, perhaps a twill. One can choose a bolero type jacket and the shirt inside whether sleeveless or not can be hip-length. And perhaps one can create an equestrian look with leather ! One can have a leather glam jacket with cropped twill pants, i.e. cropped pants inspired from jodhpurs. One needs a suitable fabric ie. Twill. Corduroy is perhaps suitable but certainly a cavalry twill. Cavalry twill is a good fabric for a formal trousers and if one has a cropped cavalry twill pants, this might help to create an equestrian look. One can have a waist length cropped leather jacket or hip-length. Maybe a glam designer jacket could complement the cropped cavalry twill pants. Instead of leather, choose a waist length ‘smart and chic’ jacket inspired from the actual riding coat but obviously shortened. These are suggestions for an equestrian look. 

Inside the jacket a white shirt/blouse with black tie or a black choker can create a look Accessories are important. Think of other details like a lacy cuff area for the shirt and the jacket may just reach to elbow length to allow the lacy cuff to be seen. Thus one has a jacket with elbow-length sleeve or at least a sleeve that is ‘tied or folded back to the elbow. 

Remember too for a certain equestrian look red cropped pants are an idea. This can create an exotic type of equestrian look. Thus one has red cropped pants and a black short jacket i.e. waist length with an inside shirt. Maybe a black t-shirt is suitable. Thus black t-shirt, jacket and red cropped pants. If one wants to use plaid or tartan, one can perhaps create an equestrian look too. Maybe a plaid skirt with the black hip length jacket or a red hip length jacket with plaid skirt.

Depending on whether you’re an apple, pear, ruler or hourglass there are ways to conceal and reveal in all the right places so acknowledge this and play up to your assets and get a full length mirror! Also many woman tend to dress more conservatively when their over fifty so think classic shapes and elegant colours.
 
 A big concern for more mature woman is loose or saggy upper arms. Luckily there are many stylish ways to conceal this problematic area with beautiful boleros, comfortable shawls and sexy shrugs. There are also many tops available that are bang on trend with three quarter length, poet, bell or angular sleeves. Body shaping undergarments are also popular regardless of age. Body suits go half way down your thigh and smooth out those areas you may not want to stand out. Most of even the slimmest plus fifties need a little help to tone and smooth so invest in some quality under garments.
 
 Look for colours that will flatter your own skin tone and buy many pieces that you know compliment your colouring, despite what the trends are telling you. Over fifties need not get caught up with fashion fads as you have seen and laughed at all the disasters that you once fell victim to. As a general rule if you have a darker complexion, quite often you’ll find that lighter colours tend to lift you. This is in contrast to those with relatively lighter complexions whose features are more distinguished when they go for darker colours, as lighter ones may make you looked washed out.
 
 Avoid wearing baggy and shapeless clothes. Instead choose classic shapes some shirtdresses, trench coats, pea jackets and jeans which are eternally youthful in spirit. Don’t expose your upper arms and neck: these are both tricky areas for most women over a certain age. Also do not remove all black from your wardrobe. It will be better to invest in several fitted black turtlenecks! They are unavoidable, flatter everyone and they always look great for day out or evening party. For going out for evening always avoid fussy, frilly evening attire. Switch to tailored instead! Don’t wear your skirts too short unless you have good legs. And the bottom line don’t overdo the glitz to look youthful, anything unfussy, minimalist, functional designs and details will add to your personality.

These recipes are from my vintage recipe collection.  They are quick, easy, and offer comfort to the family on a tight budget.  Make you family this comfort food meal featuring Virginia’s Macaroni Tuna Casserole, which has pasta, dairy, soup, tuna, and vegetables all in the one dish.  For a different salad option make this Cabbage Salad with Cooked Dressing.  Both of these recipes are from my childhood, growing up in Southern Indiana.  We may not have been rich but we were always rich with lots of good food.

MACARONI TUNA CASSEROLE BY VIRGINIA

8 oz shell macaroni
1/2 cup shredded American cheese
1/2 can cream of celery soup
1 can chunk style tuna, drained
1 box frozen peas
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
2/3 cup crushed potato chips

Cook macaroni for 6 minutes after it begins to boil. Put frozen peas in a colander When the macaroni is cooked, drain by pouring the water over the frozen peas. Place both the macaroni and peas in a large bowl. Add the tuna, cream of celery soup, butter, milk, and cheese. Mix together well to combine. Place in a buttered casserole dish. Sprinkle top with crushed potato chips. Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven until heated through.

CABBAGE SALAD WITH COOKED DRESSING

1/2 cup sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp all-purpose flour
5 tbsp pineapple juice
3 tbsp cider vinegar

In a small saucepan, combine all the above ingredients. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

1 small head of cabbage
1 cup miniature marshmallows
1/2 cup crushed pineapple, drained

Shred cabbage and pat dry with paper towels. Add the marshmallows and pineapple. Toss mixture with the cooled dressing until well coated.
